Before you adopt a greyhound it’s worth taking some time to consider if a greyhound is the right choice for your family. Greyhounds make beautiful pets, they are very adaptable and suit most lifestyles but there are some things to consider before adopting.
Why you should get a greyhound?
Greyhounds are gentle, sweet natured dogs who really enjoy human companionship. They are low maintenance pets that do not require much grooming, have few genetic health issues and are not pre-disposed to the same health problems that affect dogs of a similar size.
Despite their big appearance, greyhounds don’t need vast amounts of space, in fact they thrive in urban spaces. Greyhounds are very adaptable and are equally suited to large properties, suburban homes, units and even apartments!
Greyhounds enjoy a 15-20 minute walk most days and spend the rest of their time contently sleeping for up to 20 hours.
Greyhounds tend to be accepting, tolerant dogs making them ideal for families with children. However, this should never be taken for granted and children should learn how to respectfully interact with their new pet. We recommend children should never be left unsupervised around dogs.
Greyhounds are social animals and get on well with other breeds of dogs. All the greyhounds that come through our program have been assessed to understand how they respond to small dogs and are continually socialised and monitored around other breeds of dogs during their foster period.
