Discover a new friend during Greyhounds as Pets’ Adoption Month

April is the month to find out how adaptable, adorable and adoptable greyhounds can be.

Greyhounds as Pets (GAP) WA is encouraging people to discover the gentle companionship of greyhounds with the help of acclaimed veterinarian and animal welfare advocate Dr Garnett Hall during adoption month.

In his fourth year as GAP ambassador, Dr Hall said he was keen to follow up the success of 2021 adoption month, when 67 greyhounds found new homes and 211 applications were made by potential adoptees.

“People are spending more time at home since COVID changed our lives and work patterns so there’s never been a better time to have a greyhound companion,” he said.

“Like all dogs, they offer support, unconditional love and an incentive to get out of the house each day and get moving but greyhounds also have some special advantages.

“Greyhounds really enjoy human companionship and generally get along well with children and other pets.

“They are equally suited to large properties, suburban homes and even units and townhouses because they don’t need vast amounts of space and are happy with a couch, a beanbag and a nice spot on the floor to choose between throughout the day.

“Greyhounds are gentle, clean, low maintenance and have very few genetic health issues, which is a great benefit of being selected for athletic performance.

“Most need only a 15-20 minute walk each day and they can sleep for up to 20 hours a day so they suit the lifestyles of busy families and working couples.

“Greyhounds are just all-round excellent dogs. I love their personalities and I love being able to help them find their forever homes.”

Throughout April, GAP will discount its adoption fee from $350 to $75, with all greyhounds vet checked including a dental treatment, fully vaccinated, microchipped, sterilised and ready for adoption.

GAP matches greyhounds with homes based on their individual needs, to ensure the right fit for both the greyhound and their new family.
