GAP’s new campaign will have Greyhounds racing their way into WA hearts and homes this summer. The “Greyhounds. Great Fit” campaign educates the WA public on the surprisingly laid-back, loving, and silly side of these elegant ex-racers, proving they make the perfect companions for families, couples, and individuals alike.
The gorgeous faces of the campaign include adopter greyhounds Neo, Spencer and Jorge.
Spencer was adopted in April by Rosie and Tibby, who own BFT Gym in West Perth. Adopting Spencer has brought unexpected joy and calm to their lives. Spencer is a daily fixture at their gym, affectionately known by customers as ‘The Manager’. ‘He brings so much happiness to everyone,’ said Rosie. ‘People love seeing him, and he’s become part of the community. He really does complete us.’
‘The constant relationship is what I love most,’ added Rosie. ‘Honestly, it’s his personality. He just brings so much to everything. If we go anywhere without him, we miss him so much.’
Spencer’s presence has not only brought joy to Rosie and Tibby but also transformed how others see greyhounds. ‘When people first meet him, they’re sometimes hesitant because he’s a big dog. But within a month, they’re completely won over,’ said Tibby. ‘We even have a neighbour who wasn’t a dog person at all, and now they come over just to spend time with Spencer.’
GAP Program Manager Lexie Ekert said the campaign aims to educate the public about these often-overlooked dogs. ‘There are so many misconceptions about greyhounds. People think they’re high-energy because they’ve raced, but they’re actually incredibly chilled. Many greyhounds are great with children, other pets, and they adapt beautifully to a home environment. We can’t wait for everyone to learn what amazing companions greyhounds can make.”
Over the summer holidays, GAP is encouraging families to consider fostering a greyhound. This is a perfect time to see how a greyhound fits into their lifestyle while giving these wonderful dogs a head start in their transition to pet life.
‘Foster care is an essential part of our program because it gives dogs an insight into life as a pet,” explained Lexie. ‘Between the foster carer and the GAP team, we can set them up for success in this new phase of their lives. If you want to help our beloved hounds on their journey to retirement but aren’t ready to commit to long-term ownership, fostering a greyhound is a fantastic way to not only make a difference, but to see how a greyhound can fit your lifestyle and needs.’
Rosie and Tibby’s favourite moments with Spencer include relaxing on the balcony with coffee or taking him to the farmers market. ‘He’s such an old soul in a fit young body,’ said Rosie. ‘He brings a calmness and grounding to everything we do. He even gets us out of the house more, whether it’s a walk in the park or a quiet morning together. We just couldn’t imagine life without him.’
GAP’s new campaign will create a ripple effect of awareness, leading to even more greyhounds finding their happily-ever-after with WA families.
